While not denominationally affiliated, Burry's is an Evangelical church in the German Reformed tradition. We hold the scriptures to be inerrant and the only guide for faith and the Christian life and use the Heidelberg Catechism as the primary historical expression of our beliefs. Founded in 1835, Burry's has been a witness of faith and truth to our community for more than 180 years. When founded, it was part of the German Evangelical Protestant movement and as far as we can tell, is the last church from that tradition that still identifies as such. To find out more, click here.
Pastor Win Groseclose began serving here at Burry's in 2011, having come to us from the PCA. He is also an author and an adjunct professor of theology for a mission seminary in Ukraine. To find out more about Pastor Win or to follow his blog and twitter feeds, please click here.
The fullness of your word is truth;
everlasting is the judgment of your righteousness.
Christ's Church must be committed to Truth with a "Capital T." The Bible governs our lives, it provides us with our identity, and it is our very life's-blood. The Bible convicts us of our sin, it shows us the greatness of Christ as our savior, and it provides a pattern of life for us by which we can show our gratitude to God for all he has done.
Behold, children are an inheritance from Yahweh;
the fruit of the womb a reward.
In God's design, family is the most basic building-block of community. In a world where families are regularly under attack or are being redefined, it is our aim as a church to strengthen those families in our midst by pointing our families always to God's word, God's plan, and God's design for them. In addition, churches often serve as a kind of extended family to walk through the difficult times with you as well as to celebrate the joys that God brings in this life.
A Family of God
For the one who does the will of God, this one is my brother, my sister, and my mother.
Biological families are not the only kind of families that you will find at church. We recognize that through faith, we are children and inheritors of Abraham and Christ is our older brother. That means we are brothers and sisters with one another, called out from the world by God's grace. That is why we use the language that we are a "Grace-Driven Family of God."
I have received as my inheritance your testimonies for eternity; indeed, they are the joy of my heart..
God has given us his Word as a heritage both for our benefit and for the benefit of our children after us. In fact, in the Bible, those generations who forget the heritage of God consistently fall away into sin and idolatry. We also have a rich heritage in the Reformed Tradition that dates back to the writing of the Heidelberg catechism in the 1500s. We look back not to return there, but to remain grounded as we move forward.
The 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther's nailing the 95 Theses on the doorpost of the Church in Wittenburg. We will be honoring those who sacrificed so much to lay a theological foundation for us in the weeks to come. Join us as we reflect on Luther, Calvin, and Ursinus, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12.
